The Maltese Cross was introduced to Malta by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem upon taking possession of the islands in 1530. The Maltese Cross has become an intrinsic part of the Mediterranean island of Malta's culture and heritage, as well as a much-cherished national symbol by the Maltese.
The cross is eight-pointed and has the form of four V-shaped elements joined together at their tips, so that each arm has two points. Its design is based on crosses used since the First Crusade (1096–1099).
The eight points are said to symbolize the eight points of courage: Loyalty; Piety; Generosity; Bravery; Glory & honor; Contempt of death; Helpfulness towards the poor & the sick; and Respect for the church.
