There were so many tribes of Native American Indians it is only possible to generalize the most common meaning of the Bear symbol.
The bear by itself is a very important animal symbol, showing gentleness as well as ferocity. It represents a protector and symbolizes authority, physical strength and leadership. The bear is a magnificent creature commanding respect, so if an individual were given a name that included "bear", he knew that the tribe thought he was brave.
